There are some exciting developments coming to Halton Hospital in the not-too-distant future, one of which is the plan to build the Halton Health and Wellbeing Campus, brought to you in collaboration with NHS Halton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Basically, it’s going to be a purpose-built hub where additional health and social care services will be provided, making sure that people in the community get the care that they need when they need it from a service that is more efficient and effective.
Although the health campus is still in the very early planning stages, the anticipated outcomes are clear: increased life expectancy, closing the gap between Halton and others within Halton, reduced early mortality from stroke, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory conditions, improved mental health and improved experiences for people with dementia.
The project is part of a wider scheme called NHS England’s Healthy New Towns, for which Halton Lea has been selected. The ‘healthy new town’ concept is a partnership with various businesses and organisations across multiple sectors, including health and social care, retail and leisure, housing and regeneration. This partnership will help to relieve some of the financial strain that the NHS is currently facing – yay! #SaveOurNHS
The overall goal of the scheme is to provide better housing, more green areas, more accessible community facilities and new approaches to health and social care, all in the hope of making Halton a more cohesive community with a generally higher standard of living.
Speaking about the Healthy New Town concept, Ravi Baghirathan, NHS England said: “This is a programme that will help build aspiration in the community, give people more opportunities and where education will be a key way of delivering this. The improvements will help increase inward investment into the region, local businesses will benefit and as a result, people will be happier.”
At the heart of the healthy new town is the Halton Hospital site, home of both Halton Hospital (of course) and the state-of-the-art Cheshire and Merseyside Treatment Centre (CMTC), which is renowned for its industry-leading orthopaedic department.
Both of these hospitals are consistently rated five stars by patients on NHS Choices and we will continue to deliver this exceptional level of service at the new Halton Health and Wellbeing Centre.
Mel Pickup, Chief Executive of Warrington and Halton Hospitals, said: “We recognise that there is a long way to go but the immediate next step for the Health Campus is to organise a design challenge and involve the people who live and work in Halton and who will use or deliver the services in its creation. We urge everyone to get involved and join us in creating something that we can all be proud of – a rich health and social care legacy for Halton.”
